This shyrdak has a beautiful diamond pattern with a cool blue, white, brown and grey colour combination. This rug has a modern take on the traditional shyrdak rugs, combining geometrical shapes with traditional Kyrgyz patterns. It’s counterpart can be found under the name of Shirdak Felt rug A.
Size: 286 cm x 175 cm.
The Shyrdak rug is traditionally made by the nomad tribes of Kyrgyzstan. Living in the remote mountainous regions of Central Asia, the nomads moved along with the seasons. Living in white felt yurts, these nomads decorated their floors and walls with shyrdak felt rugs.
Their flock of sheep provided everything: wool for their clothes, house (the yurt is made of felt), beds and wall and floor coverings. The wool goes through many processes – washing, beating, rolling and dying – before it becomes felt fabric. Shyrdak rugs are made of many layers of contrasting felt. Cut using a template, the layers are then sewn together to create abstract repetitive patterns inspired by flora and fauna.
With their incredibly warm and saturated colours these tribal nomad rugs fit perfectly into western interiors.
